The second edition of AziëxNL (2024)

As part of the programming during Remembrance Day on May 4th, 2024, and as part of the PAC project Azië x Nederland, we created a new edition hosted and in collaboration with Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam, among other partners.

For this edition, I broadened the scope of our research, not limiting the stories to Amsterdam, but also looked into people of Asian descent who resided in other parts of the Netherlands during the war. From the Chinezenweg in Staphorst to the prisoners of war from the former British Indies who fought for the Nazis, these stories demonstrate not only the long-standing presence of people of Asian descent in the Netherlands but also the incredible diversity within these communities

At the kick-off event at the VMA, we launched a new webpage for AziëxNL, a digital space for all the current and future stories within this initiative. For this project, my main tasks included project management, event management, stakeholder management, overseeing all communication efforts, designing the visual identity of the project, among other things. You can read more about the evening on this page.

About AziëxNL
Participation in cultural heritage is a universal human right. Yet, the world of all things heritage is far from accessible. Many stories remain untold, and many of us are unaware that we are heritage practitioners ourselves. These are just a few of the main issues that heritage professionals have encountered for ages.

I have always been fascinated by the stories from diaspora communities in the Netherlands, particularly from Chinese and other Asian communities, because of my own background. These stories have been underrepresented for years. I played with the idea of researching those untold stories for quite some time, and PAC offered me to lead this project that was the perfect accumulation of my past experiences, as both a sinologist and heritage expert.

With the project Azië x Nederland, we aim to bridge the knowledge gap about the age-old connections between Asia, the Netherlands, and the Asian diaspora in the Netherlands through the art of storytelling.
